I tried to book 4 award tickets at once, and eventually gave up. Booked 2 and purchased 2. Only to find that the very next day there was a new pair of award tickets available to my destination.

After you settle on a specific trip, you might see if you are encountering a similar situation.

Most of the airlines will let you cancel purchased tickets within the first 24 hours. Sometimes even the first 24 hours and on up until midnight.

Even if you find there aren't additional mileage tickets available immediately and you have to go with the 2 purchased ones, you still have those miles. Nothing wrong with taking another trip in a year or so.
