I think much of the speculation (mine included) did not take into account the major reduction in capacity on the t-cons which would accompany the change.
Capacity on the SFO/LAX-NYC routes has been cut in the range of 30-40%, so it really should be no surprise that fares have risen and upgrades gotten more scarce. That's just basic economics and (IMO) has nothing to do with the appeal of the product.
