Well I called it in. Some other intrepid reader of this thread decided to call in and book himself two tickets without reporting back. Thanks much for that, this is why I worry sometimes about sharing itineraries here lol.

Anyway they upgraded right away without any waitlist. So the answer seems to be that if there is R space, Latitude will upgrade right away. The website would seem to be wrong when it says you will be waitlisted.
