I'm confused (again). Seems to be a common theme for me.

AC flys to SYD and codeshares to MEL. The SYD did not offer AQMs last year, so how is this different.

AC codeshares NZ to AKL, so one could also use that as a routing.

Switching to UA is possible a great idea for you, but I fail to see how this specific example differs from the same decision a year ago.
