Between Pudong and XJH it's a rather nice experience. And my journeys have been on that stretch mostly. But after reading your comment, can imagine the circle lines 3&4 and the XJH commuters packing the carriages towards the West and South.
I have referred to trains arriving in XJH as vomiting passengers. XJH to Pudong is much less packed. Yishan Road doesn't add too much and at 7 PM last night the trains were still pretty full heading towards XJH.
