Also consider the fare class you're buying into at the coach level. My guess is that it's a very low on the totem pole T,X,V fare which is the cheapest available. As we get closer to those flights the coach fare will increase and and become much more closer to the W fare (if not surpass).
It remains to be seen how the price of the W fare will be affected as the flights approach.. Will they get more expensive as departure date nears and the number of C+ dwindles to fewer and fewer seats? I think yes but I suspect the W fares will be much like FCM is now in that when booking a flight T-7 days from departure premium on the W fare will be more in the $29 to $99 range depending on distance. Only time will tell.
I agree with you that C+ is not worth $400 (not even on JFK-LAX/SFO TCONS) but not everyone will have that opportunity/luxury to book travel 5 months out and snag that lowest coach fare.
