Agree about the letter. Just clearly state that the rental was 10+ months ago and that it is ridiculous that they would be charging you now for something you obviously didn't do. Then I would just ignore it from that point forward. If they try to charge your credit card, dispute it and use the letter as proof.

Assuming the facts are as stated, and based on past experience with this sort of thing, I highly doubt you will forced to pay anything. The letter was a hail mary to try to get some money out of you. Some people will get scared and pay. Don't be the sucker here.
