I only have experience with
SkyAuction so I can't help too much. I think with any of them though, the best thing you can do is watch the auctions you are interested in for a few weeks to see how they go. This will let you know on average, how much the flights are going for. As long as the flights you are bidding on are elligible for the dates you want to travel, I don't think it is too early to start bidding. Prices aren't likely to go down as the summer season approaches.
Also make sure that you don't end up paying more than you would for a flight you booked yourself. Sign up for farewatchers on Travelocity and Expedia so you are aware if any sales are announced.
