Face scans to be used in Australia for security
A high-tech security system that scans passengers' faces to identify terrorist suspects will be introduced at all Australian airports this year.
The locally developed SmartGate is already under trial at Sydney Airport, using Qantas volunteers.
The Sunday Telegraph first revealed plans for the trials last April.
Under the system, a person's passport is placed on a reader, their identity is verified, and Smartgate then compares them against a criminal database.
