Emirates airlines has once unilaterally cancelled one of my tickets, because I had another ticket on the same day (for which I just wanted to change the date afterwards as it was a completely flexible ticket). Fortunately this has been "corrected" by a phone agent.
So you may ask what is the benefit in two reservations even if I can only stay in one hotel?
I am planning to go to the Euro 2016 and I am not yet sure which game I will attend on a specific date. As rooms are getting rare I want to secure a room in both cities and wait for the UEFA confirmation on which ticket I get and cancel the spare room at that moment...
I've done it many times to keep my options open while finalizing travel plans. I booked three separate hotels in Munich for Oktoberfest 2012 one year out before deciding on a particular HI with a good free night points rate. ICHG has never canceled any of them, although you may have phone agents mention any existing overlapping reservations if you're booking through them.
