I flew PDX-JFK Thursday night. GA made a similar announcement just before boarding and then went so far as to say it was a full flight(it was not) and that if you're sitting in Rows 6-10, there will most likely be no overhead bin space available. Saw about 20 people lined up to gate check bags as I boarded.
