Honestly, If UA allows their employees to play these stupid semantic games to harass their customers, they will be well on their way to oblivion.

With the worldwide economy on the down-slope, I really don't think that it's an appropriate time for UA to antagonize its very loyal flyers any further.

Oh you mean the part of our briefing everyday where the leads and supervisors tell us to "harass" people about their bags? Of course some of the experiences here are ridiculous and do border on nitpicking but do you not agree that if some guidelines are not in force, passengers would run amok. Regardless of your status you are still affected by those that don't play by the rules and you should also play by the rules and then everyone can have a nice ride. Can't understand how the rules don't bother those who want to bring on the their overstuffed (by their definition) carry on but when they see other passengers getting away with it and overstepping their space, then it's an annoyance.
