They're also responsible for promugating the concept that "Thumrait" is a city in Oman.
I was a military journalist during Desert Shield/Storm, and one particularly mushmouthed senior officer (this guy did daily press briefings) had a habit of mispronouncing "The Emirate of Oman" as "Thumrait, Oman." The civilian pool journalists never bothered to ask for the correct spelling of "Thumrait" (double
), and so you will occasionally see stories on CNN Interactive datelined "Thumrait, Oman,"
even today.
