i just came back from merida. used it as a base for 5 nights - did chichen itza- for 1/2 day trip, as well as uxmal, and the nearby ruins which you should visit because they are just about empty so you can really enjoy the atmosphere. merida is great, not too crazy unless you head out of the touristy areas toward the local markets where it gets a lot more crowded and busy.
