I agree strongly with your first statement. I disagree strongly with your second. When you've got a tight connection and a slightly delayed first flight, that 5 minutes waiting on gate checked bags can make all the difference in the world.

Also an excellent idea. I can't believe I haven't heard this one around here regularly. On a lot of flights, it'll probably be the best $2-3 you've ever spent. medichill, do they ever make it awkward or act like you're trying to buy their favor? Or are they just appreciative that somebody's giving them something, rather than yelling at them?
