I think that this is a recent (and very welcome) development. Previously, the card would be charged immediately, and then when cancelling within 24 hours for a refund, it was not uncommon to have to wait a very long time and keep chasing BA.
Now they just pre-authorise the card, and the authorisation drops as the cancellation is before the card is actually charged ^
