In business class you can definitely get a seat assignment ahead of time. In my experience you have to call Lufthansa for that though. United should show you the Lufthansa confirmation code on its reservation page (there should be a link "View additional confirmation numbers"), but if it doesn't then the Lufthansa agent can always look you up by name and flight number. You will need the Lufthansa confirmation number to check in.
