I heard another FTer rented about 2 weeks ago in Hertz and he said it was a nightmare, his SUV had parts falling off.
Normally I would say this is a no brainer but since we plan on a road trip to NM we do need a reliable car.
yeah i saw your post there, too. If it were me, one person's bad experience would not be enough to deter me from Hertz. If you don't like the vehicle they assign, you can always request a different one (especially if you say you have a very long road trip ahead of you). You could even stop at a different hertz location along the way and switch out the car if you wanted.
Worst case scenario, keep both reservations (assuming they are not pre-paid), and if you don't like the SUV and they don't have anything else to offer you, cancel it and go to Alamo.
