It would have been interesting to see if the seat selections would have remained after the booking had been split to process the change to only your ticket. There have been plenty of stories about former GCH losing Gold-only seat assignments after dropping to Silver. Although unlikely, the same might have happened for seats assigned for free on the basis of a former travel partner's status.

A possibly free but more convoluted way to test this would have been to make the reservation for all on a single PNR, assign the seats for free and then cancel only your ticket within the 24 hour grace period and rebook for the dates you wanted!
