Yes. It happens a lot. Schedule changes after you already buy the ticket, and it's cheaper just to buy a new segment.

Buy the return ticket whenever it's best to do it, but don't cancel until the last minute. There's always the (slight) possibility that the flight gets cancelled or changed. Then you can actually get your money back.
