Skipping last leg of flight + buying new one-way?

I want to change the second half of my trip so that I can return at a later date (about 10 days later). However, with change fees and additional fare this would cost me over $300. I can get a new one-way return ticket for a little over $100. If I were to do this, I would simply skip the return portion of my original booking. However, I've read that airlines have begun looking for this type of behavior. Is it likely that they will recognize what I've done, and cancel my one-way return ticket? Thanks in advance!
