As pewpew mentioned, I ran into such issues going from SFO-YYZ to SFO-YVR-YYZ that I can hardly imagine trying anything more than that. That change required almost as much concierge assistance as Earn Your Wings.
Specifically for YYT-YHZ, the fare routing rules only allow the nonstop.
That's what I was thinking... If a SDC to a "normal/allowable" routing for a SE caused that kind of trouble, I doubt an E35 would have much luck trying to fly over three times the distance of the short nonstop. Although it's always worth asking
I do know however that during IRROPS or schedule changes, phone agents are more willing to allow interesting routings that are otherwise not allowed.
