It's possible to increase the number of segments, but you'd be at the agent's whim here. Many will say no just to do less work. canadiancow had a thread here where he did an SDC on SFO-YYZ to SFO-YVR-YYZ and ended up needing to get an FIM so he could fly YVR-YYZ. In essence, it's not a run-of-the-mill change for whatever reason.

In any case, don't most AC fares allow 3-4 connections? e.g. YVR-YOW/YUL could be done YVR-YYC/YEG-YYZ-YOW/YUL?
