I afraid NONE of these qualify as a SPA. It is used loosely for the unaware American, who think a Spa is a fitness center with some drinks. THere are some ESSENTIALS missing to be a SPA regardless of the price they charge or the size of the facility!
I have been using 'real' SPA hotels for Rest & Relaxation my whole adult life around the World. The main essential element are healing mineral waters from the bowels of MOther Earth! Mostly warm to hot and some cool to cold. You can drink it for the therapeutic effects on the internal organs. Swim in it for the exercise or just sit in the 'waters' for the 2 way exchange of elements (minerals), that also promote healing. At most European spas, you do all three along with various treatments for various illnesses. And the programs are taken seriously with medical supervision. There are a wider variety of massage treatments above and beyond what the average spa going American recognizes. Most of the spas listed in the previous post base their reputations on 'pampering'. That 'pampering' consists of little more then a drink or two of bottled waters, maybe a smoothie, and in extreme cases a tea!! LOL
Minimal therapeutic effects! Still bettter then junk food and diet colas!!!!
Getting a makeover or some 'color' in the hair or nails is a side note in Euurope.
A SPA hotel may be little more then a lot of the HOT MINERAL waters like in Desert Hot Springs. Facials and Massages are also offered. I have taken advantage of these on many a weekend. Or for the afternoon, when I lived in the Palm Springs. Thirty two years ago, I developed a severe case of Prostate infection after a wild weekend in Las Vegas. So I planned a 5 day stay at the Spa Hotel over a Thanksgiving week, and was in and out of the hot mineral water pools all day and nite long. Haven't had a problem SINCE that time with the prostate.
In October, have a week stay planned at a favorite SPA HOTEL in Baden-Baden for the healing waters, that are especially good for the circulation and arteries, which also effect aging.
Two years ago visited Czech Repulic and stayed a Spa hotel in Karlovy Vary (Carlsbad)
with a SERIOUS medical program and especially good for Digestive problems including the liver and gallbladder. Although, the food was not up to the standard of the next location. Fifty years of foreign rule was not kind to Eastern Europe.
In Bad Hofgastein, Austria, my favorite mineral waters and SPA hotels specialize in NEUROMUSCULAR problems. As well as, spinalcord injuries caused by serious accidents. The village has a hotel school, which makes for the VERY best hotel service, I have ever experienced with exceptional food. And far from the most expensive like any at Las Vegas Hotels. Under $100.00 per day.
There is much more to Spas and the healing effects of the waters found at REAL 'spas'. They are medically orientated in Europe and the Governments paid for treatments until recently. Many spa hotels are used for ski sport hotels in the winter. Perfect combination after a day or two of sking!
