Looking at an AUS/NZ trip in late February or March of 2017. My passport expires in mid October 2017 (7 months or so after my trip). Will I have any issues with entry into either Australia or New Zealand?
I assume you are a US citizen and plan to enter Australia under a ETA Visa? If so, that visa is good for 3 months so having 7 months left should be acceptable.

If you are a US citizen you will not need a visa for NZ for stays of less than 3 months. NZ requires at least 3 months passport validity after your intended departure date to enter.

So, should be OK.
