Cellular phones on board

Hi,

on a United flight yesterday, I was seated next to a person who had his cell phone turned on the entire flight. I noticed it b/c he pulled it out in the middle of the flight and started playing with it. It was clearly turned on and attempting to find a signal.

I kindly said that cellular phones are supposed to be turned off, and he just said "yeah i know, but whatever."

I have seen quite a few ppl who had accidentally forgotten to turn their phone off, but this guy obviously thought it was alright to have his phone switched on.

I really don't think that cellular phones cause any interference, but I would still feel extremely uncomfortable switching on my cell phone when it is not permitted.

What are you experiences w/ cell phone usage on flights (by either you or other passengers)?
