It just needs to be applied before the expiration date. Please note there is no wait listing so there must be upgrade space open up before 12/31. Also make sure you are in a high enough fare bucket to use.
Some people have reported luck getting the GGU reissued with a new expiration date on a cancelled reservation so hoping the same for Low fare guarantee. Be careful low fare guarantee can and will drop you in to a fare not eligible for upgrades so best to call for that. Only the gold member can contact AS to get it reissued
Did not read the rules on GGU carefully enough. For some reason, I was still super-imposing the basic ideas of the old UA CR-1. It's been a long while since I've had a chance to deal with upgrade certs. I have a much better understanding now! Thanks!
