I think they can see TPs very easily - checked in at T5 first as gold a few months ago, more than half way into my membership year, and the check in agent immediately asked me if I'd had trouble getting credit for flights as I had zero TPs - which led to a slightly embarrassing "umm... sorry... Star Alliance have been cheaper?"
