Electronis boarding passes did/do exist at Delta. Before 9/11 Delta had introduced a system whereby all you needed was your Skymiles card (to which they had barcoded the back) to go from the curb to the plane. Basically the scanners at the gate were programmed to accept them and there was no need for a boarding pass. 9/11 has changed it a bit.
