You've asserted your opinion that it's obligatory, claimed custom, and thrown out dark hints of "repercussions", but you certainly haven't provided any facts to support it.

Several posters in this thread have stated in one way or another that they do not believe the practice is mandatory. If it were so, don't you think it would be near universally acknowledged, especially among a community like this?

Furthermore, no one has yet stepped up with tales of woe resulting from failure to tip housekeeping. In fact, some have stated they've noticed no effect whatsoever.

As for "custom", well..."custom" is the excuse for continuing anachronistic practices whose utility passed long ago. In short, it's little more than cultural inertia, IMHO. In any case, I don't believe the practice we're discussing is customary. YMMV.

Sorry, but if you're trying to put forth a convincing rationale, I'm afraid you'll have to do better than that.
