I had to check my bags planeside LGA-IAD on a regional jet and the bags were delayed two days. It was a mess.

But recently my carry-on broke on the way to LA, and I convinced the nice lady in Baggage service to fix it, give me a loaner etc., even though I hadn't checked the bag.
