There was something in a Canadian paper a few years ago which interviewed some guide book review writers. Apparently, their budget is so tight that it does not allow them to do any meaningful new and update research. So the first thing they do when they arrive at a destination is check into a hotel and basically see what competing guide books are saying and using those sources.
A friend who has extensively used LP commented that their rates are some 30-50% below current.
