Then you should assume that you are not on the list to get an upgrade at the gate. You might be able to nicely ask the GA to upgrade you and pull your miles, but this works only if the GA knows how to do it and has time, often only after processing all other upgrades.

Hence I think your best bet would be to remove the upgrade request using miles and ask for a free elite upgrade.
