If you are talking about the US, it will depend on two things. First, whether you have Pre-Check and second, whether you have a so-called "TSA compliant" sleeve / case.
Pre-Check does not require you to remove your laptop from your carry-on at all. If the sleeve is "TSA compliant" you may put the item through the scanner in the sleeve.
If you are unsure either ask or just put the laptop in its own bin without a sleeve or any other item and then put it back in its sleeve after the checkpoint.
