Thinking back, I don't recall ever being asked for an ID on the train. Yes, at a station picking up tickets (back in the day), but never on the train.
I personally haven't been asked in several years now; but just two months ago or so I saw a conductor who was following the correct procedures when he did ask someone nearby for ID after his iPhone indicated that this was the random person for him to check.
