Here now, platinum experience.
At the hotel now as a platinum. Family of 3 with a child under 8 yrs old.
Room: booked a garden view with $50 resort credit per night at under $165/night for four. Taxes brought it to $700usd, and we got $200 resort credit. Since this was a shorter-then-normal vacation, we decided to try and eat mostly at the hotel. It was a little concerning to me that they don't post prices on the menu posted on the website.
Room:booked garden view. Upgraded to an ocean and pool view premium on the fifth floor. Room was nice. REALLY nice. Lots of marble tiles, king bed, queen sleeper sofa. Flatscreen tv with 6-8 English channels. Huge closet. Free mini water bottles replaced daily. Bathroom with separate toilet area. 4.5/5
Grounds: seemed to be constant painting and maintenance. Lots of nice green plantings, but not many flowers. Pool is huge, with a great swim up bar! Hottub had room every time we went to go in. 4/5
Beach: yep. Seaweed. LOTS of it. I didn't smell it as other reviews on other sites have indicated, but it felt wierd to walk on it. The beach is narrow. The seaweed was all over. We saw a tractor make one pass daily. This didn't really help. Also, the surf was rough and filled with it. If we don't return to cancun, this will be the single reason why!!! 1/5. (1 star for having a ton of chairs!!!)
Plat benefits: recently reduced (according to front desk). 15% off bfast buffet and 10%off gift shop. A nice plat room upgrade though. That was about it. 3.5/5
Staff (non food):EXCELLENT. Helpful and attentive, while not overbearing.
Food (on resort):
La capilla - breakfast buffet. EXCELLENT. Probably best since shelbourne or Paris champs Marriott. Cost was 302 pesos per person after discount. Included omelet station, traditional American, Mexican and some Asian items. We were filled for hours. 5/5. Value. 5/5 service
Lunch outside (isla something). Great grouper fingers and nachos. Drinks were 75 (beer), 110 (regular - margarita, piņa colada) to 140 (specialty) pesos. Pours were GENEROUS!!! Typical lunch was 2 platters for 3 of us to split. A "bunch" (total of 6-8 alcohol and 1 non alcohol) of drinks and tip. Total price was around 1100 pesos ($66usd) 4.5/5 value. 5/5 service.
Dinner at mikado-this is the hibachi grill. Made reservations for 730 w concierge. Showed up at 7 (luckily) to see if they had any openings. Good thing we did as hibachi is only hourly, on the hour. Place was 50% full at most. Meals were ok. Grill show was good. Server was so-so. Impossible to get her attention to get a fork for the kids at the grill. No return drink orders, dirty plates not cleared. Hibachi meal for kids is done in back, not in grill. Wife and I had one choice each, with fried rice, 2 beers total. Unlike every other hibachi grill I have been to where you get a lot to eat, this meal is: edamame for appetizer, veggies, miso soup, rice and meat. No salad, no shrimp appetizer. Total with tip was 1600 ($96usd) value 3/5. Service 3.5/5
Dinner at champions. Great "vibe" to it. Lots of tvs. LOTS. sports games everywhere. We had burgers, an appetizer, some shrimp casserole and a kids burger. 3 beers, 3 glasses of wine. Food was GREAT. Hit the spot after a long day on the beach. Total price was 1400 ($84usd). Value 4.5/5. Service 4.5/5.
Food (off resort).
Had dinner at "the blue gecko". Think hole-in-the-wall small (VERY) local joint. This place was awesome. It was 110 peso taxi ride (each way). We had a great time. Ordered a few different tacos to share/taste, taco salad, and appetizer to split. Music was fun and Monday night football was on. The food ROCKED. SERIOUSLY. It was filled with so many different flavors. The server was fun. She interacted with us just enough. Laughed and joked, but wasn't overbearing. We also had 5 margaritas, 4 piņas, 1 nonalcoholic pina, 3 shots of top shelf tequila and 3 shots of "pink lemonade". (Prior to stumbling into the taxi!!!). Total bill was 1300 ($78usd). Value 5/5. Service 5/5.
Would I come back?? Hmmm. Probably not. I think (right now) better value can be had at all inclusives. I looked at a few AIs prior to booking this. I thought I Could beat the total cost, but I couldnt. (I will update what I ended up spending upon completion tomorrow). AIs were around $1500-1800 for 4 nights all in. I will be around $1900. Also, the beach was....subpar. If Marriott offers free breakfast to elites it would make it a tougher decision not to come back.
If anyone has any questions let me know.
