Age of an airplane does not necessarily have an influence on the safety of the operation. Maintenance does. Of course older planes do require more maintenance than brand new.
Those rankings which use historic data, how many fatal crash or how many total death in the airline history, as part of the criteria. And we all know which accident has dragged the number down
