To the OP: You should try to see if you can get you flight to Milan included in your award flight to Europe. There isn't a direct *A flight from LHR, and I assume that this bit you want to keep locked in, but possibly consider a connecting flight on LH or LX.

With separate tickets you should allow a minimum of three, better four, hours before your onward BA flight. Having said that, if there is a significant delay on the UA flight and you miss your outbound BA flight, you will have almost certainly lost these entirely and shouldn't expect much lenience from BA. It's a risky move because you have no control of the situation.

I would also expect no interlining of baggage.
