I have just traveled from New Zealand to Singapore then on to Malaysia with two new clubs (hybrid and a fairway wood) as check-in luggage. I put plenty of bubble wrap and foam padding around the clubs, packed firmly inside the original boxes and they made it in one piece. Didn't buy insurance and no issues with customs anywhere on the trip. The only slight complication was the boxes came out of the odd-sized luggage belt, not the regular belt.
