Are you sure you mean SAT and not perhaps DAL? I was just in San Antonio and it was a 9 mile drive from the airport to my hotel on the Riverwalk. Around the airport was just strip malls and the like.
I was wondering the same thing. SAT is north of I-410. While it's close to the middle of the city limits, I think of the boundaries of the city itself as the 410 loop, and nothing is really walkable from the airport.
The single bus line isn't ideal, but it isn't awful either as city buses go. It will take you downtown, or I can get to within a block of my house in the Deco District with a single transfer.
