You took the words right out of my mouth, word for word.

I can't tell you how many times security people have told me that it was the shoes that set off the alarm. I inform them that my shoes don't have a metal shank, which they laugh off with 'you obviously don't know very much about shoes; they ALL have a metal shank!'
