My usual practice is that when I notice that the official boarding time (adjusted for announced flight delays) has arrived, I start packing up my laptop, grab a couple cookies, and then wander down from the MLL. I usually arrive in the middle of zone 1 boarding.
Every time I do this the boarding has been super efficient and I invariably arrive in the middle of zone 5 boarding (or worse, during "final call, paging passenger islandcub1...).
Of course, every time I'm at the gate at boarding time boarding is total chaos and I wind up standing around for at least 15 minutes (since every seat is taken).
