Maybe UL regularly sells out the J cabin on UL 454 CMB-NRT or maybe they let J seats fly out empty or maybe like CX they release them at the last minute. There is very little feedback here on FT with UL awards so no one knows.
No. AA would only pay UL the price of the flight coupon - in this case, it is in Coach.

You do not understand how the settlement between airlines work - it is settled with how the flight coupon indicated, not how you paid your FFP miles. That is why several people tell you that you would NOT be upgraded by UL at the gate UNLESS AA reissues your ticket to reflect the segment in F or C. How you paid AA for whatever award, UL could not care less as it has nothing to do how UL gets paid.

Unless you can get AA issued you a flight segment in F or C on the UL segment, there is NO WAY you would get into the J cabin on your UL flight, short of buying the upgrade at the gate, similar to how JL handles the domestic flights - regardless what award people ticketed, the domestic JL flights are all booked into Economy but JL often sells upgrades at the gate. The only way is to buy up.
