As stated, Air china will not do complimentary upgrades. I was Gold/Plat with CA for many years and was never upgraded Internationally. If the flight is overbooked, they will upgrade on CA status . You can pay for the upgrade at check In and will be charged the difference in fare. They had a promotion to pay for upgrades on the flight if there were seats available. I have never tried this.
