I stayed her this last weekend. Service standards are high, as should be expected. The hotel as usual was at or near capacity. The rooms and some common areas are really getting dated. The rooms especially have no charm in the bedroom area, while the showers and toilets are still great. This place will soon need a renovation, especially as competitive as Kyoto is now with the Ritz, etc.
This was a holiday weekend, so everything in Kyoto was packed, but on the second day of our stay the breakfast area by 7am was completely overwhelmed. Our server continually was losing her composure, which is rare in Japan. She was being rude and trying to rush service, which meant she screwed our order up no less than 3 times. I knew she was having a tough time so I tried to be understanding and thanked her deeply after we were done, but I'd assume that most staff should be more prepared than she was, especially when most of the people eating were just having the buffet, so all she had to do was offer coffee.
