Until the airlines' systems mysteriously dropped your FF number therefore your "known Traveler" status is lost. This has happened to us a few times, primarily on UA award tickets booked under one PNR as well as BA's (when AA FF numbers are successfully put in the reservations). The second passenger almost always lost his FF number, hence the "pre-check". No idea why that happens but it has happened multiple times to husband's tickets.

Exactly! On one UA trip we even added back his FF number at the President's club at IAH. The system still managed to drop it on our return, and DH once again did not have pre-check. On the e-ticket receipt, the FF numbers were there. On the online My Trip, everything looked normal. Yet the information did not carry onto the boarding pass.
