Here's a hint, if you don't want to pay the fee, then check in at the airport. Real Mature. AA hasn't programmed their website one way or another, the website is a SHARES overlay and that's how the reservation system works. You literally can't check in for a flight and not have a seat assignment.
Do you mean a SABRE overlay??? I thought SHARES ended with the transition of all flights to AA.
In fact, the old usairways.com check-in (presumably SHARES-based) would simply assign you a premium seat (if you ignored their request to buy one). OTOH, god only knows what SABRE does (and I used to work there).
