I consider calling to cancel part of a social contract. It helps other potential passengers get a seat or get their preferred seat. I also call to cancel doctors appointments, etc.

The "What is in it for me" attitude probably explains why so many people expect public urinals to magically flush themselves.

Help one another and the world is a bit easier.
