You are indeed missing something. You do NOT have to rebook a reservation at the time you cancel your flight. The funds remain in the eticket file for up to one year after your original date of purchase and can be accessed and applied to a new reservation in your name to any destination the airline flies on any date. The residual value of the ticket, minus the change fee ($200 on the legacy carriers such as AA, UA, and DL), can be applied to and deducted from the cost of the new ticket.
