I think it was AC that provided a screw-together steel wire loop 'cord' that refused to tidy itself away, various other with stiff leatherette buckle-up devices that are little better, etc

BMI's plastic nodule set cords were a triumph that I still move to other tags when needed, and the (later?) brass ferrule ones a decent effort that didn't quite have the same durability or engineering cachet

. A foot or so of paracord or thin marine sheet with a tidy knot is a good equivalent ^.
